Dext alternatives

Dext captures receipts, invoices and bank statements and codes them into accounting software. It is sold to accounting and bookkeeping firms, which pay per client, and to businesses directly. Sabby Gill has been CEO since October 2022.

Firms comparing it fall into two groups. Some want another capture tool, and look at the directory's document capture category, which includes Datamolino, Veryfi and Klippa. Others want software that goes further and prepares the books, and compare AI bookkeeping tools such as Booke AI, Botkeeper, Kick, Finlens and Synthetic, all listed below.

What Dext does

How to choose

  • Who will keep the books: the business itself, an accounting firm, or a service that does the bookkeeping for you?
  • Does it file the taxes you need where you operate, such as VAT returns, sales tax or e-invoicing?
  • Which banks, payroll and payment apps does it connect to today?
  • Can your accountant work in it alongside you, and how is that priced per client?

Common questions

What does Dext add to Xero or QuickBooks?+

Dext sits on top of the ledger rather than replacing it. Firms use it for line-item extraction, supplier coding rules, bank and supplier statement extraction and data health checks across their client list, then publish the coded transactions to Xero, QuickBooks or one of the other ledgers it supports, 36 in all.

How is Dext priced?+

Accounting and bookkeeping firms pay per client per month on an annual subscription, with add-ons such as data health and insights also priced per client. Businesses buying direct pay a monthly fee set by the number of documents and users, with line-item and statement extraction as add-ons or pay-as-you-go.

Which Dext alternatives use AI to do the bookkeeping?+

Booke AI, Kick, Finlens, Synthetic and Docyt automate categorisation and reconciliation, and Botkeeper and Uplinq combine automation with human review. Double (formerly Keeper) covers client queries and month-end review for firms.
