IRIS Software Group Adds AI Document Management for CPA Firms
IRIS has launched AI-driven document management for CPAs that tags and files client files automatically, with no pricing announced.
IRIS Software Group launched IRIS Document Management on November 2, 2026, an AI-driven product for CPA firms that automatically tags client documents and files them by template, folder path and year. The announcement carries no price, so IRIS pricing for its document solutions is the first open question for buyers.
The launch matters to firms because document handling sits between every busy season task: intake, tax preparation, review and archive. Software that routes files to the right client and engagement without manual sorting removes a step that staff repeat hundreds of times a week.
It also changes the shortlist for firms already on IRIS tools. Existing customers of IRIS Doc.It and IRIS iChannel can move to the new product, which IRIS describes as the platform both are converging into.

What IRIS Document Management does
IRIS Document Management combines document storage, a client portal and practice management functions in one place. Staff search in plain language across PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and optical character recognition makes scanned documents searchable too.
Documents are tagged automatically from the firm’s own library, so classification stays consistent between staff. Autofiling rules then route each file by template, folder path and year to the correct client and engagement. Rename on route and rule validation keep the structure uniform as a firm adds clients.
Users can download, copy, move and create documents in bulk in one step. Check-out, version control and in-browser editing of Microsoft Office files are included.
A branded client portal lets clients send and receive documents and see the status of what they have submitted. That replaces the chasing email thread, which is where many firms lose track of missing items.
IRIS also designed the product to help firms leave paper filing or legacy on-premise servers. Digitisation, OCR and rules-based autofiling are meant to have documents organised from the first day of use.
How IRIS pricing and packaging work for its solutions so far
IRIS has not announced pricing for the product, and it has not published a general availability date beyond the launch itself. Firms weighing IRIS pricing against their current document solutions will need a quote from the vendor.
The packaging is clearer. IRIS Document Management works as a standalone product and does not require any other IRIS software. Firms that want a connected platform can pair it with IRIS Firm Management, which brings time, work in progress, billing, due dates and reporting into the same system.
That split matters for budgets. A firm that already runs its own billing and tax stack can buy the document layer alone, while a firm replacing several tools can price the bundle. IRIS pricing for the solutions on each route is quoted separately, so comparing like with like takes care.
The announcement does not say which tax preparation products the new tool connects to directly. Firms using third-party tax software should ask IRIS for the integration list before committing.
Security and AI handling of client files
Client documents hold tax identification numbers, bank details and payroll records, so the security design carries as much weight as the filing rules. IRIS lists role-based access control, single sign-on, two-factor authentication and conditional access.
Full audit trails, retention management and legal holds support what IRIS calls defensible document handling. Those controls matter when a firm has to show a regulator or insurer who opened which file and when.
On AI specifically, IRIS said all AI processing happens in the region where the data is stored, and that no client data is used to train AI models. Both statements bear on data residency obligations for firms with clients in more than one jurisdiction.
IRIS has not named the AI models or the OCR engine behind the product. It has not published accuracy rates for tagging or filing either. Firms should test the autofiling rules on a sample of their own clients and measure the misfile rate before switching a full client book.
IRIS Document Management in a crowded field
The product enters a market where practice management and tax vendors already bundle document features. The comparison most CPA firms make is between a dedicated document system and an all-in-one portal. Accountio’s Canopy vs TaxDome comparison sets out how two of those portal-led platforms differ.
Tax-centred vendors have also moved into the area. Wolters Kluwer added agentic AI to its CCH Axcess tax preparation software, and Thomson Reuters released its latest CoCounsel for tax and accounting. Those products start from the tax return and work outward, while IRIS starts from the filing cabinet.
That is the practical difference. A document-first product suits firms whose pain is retrieval, retention and client requests across many service lines. A tax-first suite suits firms whose pain is preparation and review.
IRIS bought Doc.It, a document management provider for North American CPA firms, in 2021, and it launched IRIS Firm Management for the region in November 2023. The new product continues that consolidation. Firms new to the category can start with Accountio’s guides to document management software for accountants and why tax accountants need digital document management.
Does auto-filing save time for CPA firms
IRIS has not published time savings for the product, and no independent CPA firm has reported results on it yet. The claim to test is simple: whether automatic tagging and routing cuts the hours staff spend sorting and renaming files.
The savings should be largest at firms with high document volumes and inconsistent folder habits. They will be smaller where staff already follow a strict naming convention.
The error cost runs the other way. A misfiled document in a tax engagement can be a missed form or a delayed return, so a firm needs a review step for low-confidence tags. IRIS says users can validate rules, but it has not described a confidence threshold.
Jonathan Priestley, general manager for global accountancy solutions and transformation at IRIS, framed the product as a first step.
“The AI in IRIS Document Management takes on the manual work around documents: finding them, reading them and tagging them.”
Jonathan Priestley, General Manager for Global Accountancy Solutions and Transformation, IRIS
He added that the next step is AI that helps firms act on what is inside documents, and helps clients see what is needed from them and when.
What to watch next
Three details will decide how the product competes: the IRIS pricing quoted for its solutions, the tax software it connects to, and the first firm results on filing accuracy. IRIS has said it will keep building AI into the everyday workflow, with document-aware features as the stated next release area.
Firms on Doc.It and iChannel should ask IRIS for a migration timeline before the next busy season. Moving a document archive mid-season carries risk, and the sensible window is before January.
