What is contract-to-cash?
Contract-to-cash is the process that turns a signed customer contract into collected cash and recognised revenue: reading the commercial terms, setting up billing schedules, invoicing, collecting payment, applying cash to invoices, handling disputes and recognising revenue. It is a B2B variant of order-to-cash that starts from negotiated contracts rather than individual orders.

How contract-to-cash works
The process starts when a contract is signed, often in the CRM. Its terms, such as prices, billing frequency, payment terms, discounts, usage rates, ramps and renewal dates, are captured and turned into a billing schedule. Invoices go out on schedule, payments are collected and matched to invoices, and overdue accounts move into collections. In parallel, the same contract terms drive revenue recognition and deferred revenue. Problems usually start at the first step: when contract terms are re-keyed by hand, billing errors, disputes and slow collections follow. AI now reads contracts to extract terms directly. Tabs covers the whole sequence from contract extraction to revenue recognition, and Monk runs contract-to-cash for B2B accounts receivable.
Common questions
What is the difference between contract-to-cash and order-to-cash?+
Order-to-cash starts from individual orders, as in product businesses. Contract-to-cash starts from negotiated agreements with recurring, usage or milestone terms, as in B2B software and services.
What is the difference between contract-to-cash and quote-to-cash?+
Quote-to-cash also covers the sales steps before signature, such as configuring products, pricing and quoting. Contract-to-cash starts once the contract is signed.
Why do contract-to-cash processes break down?+
Mostly because contract terms are re-keyed into billing by hand, so invoices miss discounts, ramps or usage terms, which leads to disputes and late payment.
