What is a VAT return?
A VAT return is the periodic report a VAT-registered business files with its tax authority, showing the VAT it charged on sales, the VAT it paid on business purchases and the difference. If more VAT was charged than paid, the business pays the balance; if less, it reclaims the difference. Returns are usually monthly or quarterly.

How a VAT return works
Each EU member state sets its own return form, frequency and deadlines within the EU VAT Directive, which requires a standard rate of at least 15%. Returns typically show sales and purchases split by rate, intra-EU supplies and acquisitions, reverse-charge amounts and the net VAT due; many countries also require listings of cross-border sales or detailed transaction data. In the UK, most businesses file every three months, and the deadline is usually one calendar month and seven days after the end of the period, with payment due by the same date; returns are filed through Making Tax Digital compatible software. The UK standard rate is 20% and registration is required once taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in 12 months. Accounting software builds the return from the VAT codes on each transaction, and tax engines handle multi-country filings.
Common questions
What is the difference between output VAT and input VAT?+
Output VAT is the VAT a business charges on its sales. Input VAT is the VAT it pays on business purchases. The return reports both and the difference is paid or reclaimed.
What happens if a VAT return is late?+
Tax authorities charge penalties and interest. In the UK, late returns build up penalty points and a financial penalty once a threshold is reached, and late payment interest runs from the due date.
Can a VAT return be corrected?+
Yes. Small errors can usually be corrected on the next return within set limits; larger or older errors must be disclosed to the tax authority separately.
