What is spend management software?

Spend management software controls company money before it goes out: corporate cards with limits set in advance, expense claims, supplier invoices and approvals, and the accounting entries that follow. Expense management is the part that handles employee claims and receipts; spend management is the wider category that adds cards, bills, procurement and the controls around them.

Card-led platforms fund the spending themselves and give the software away: Ramp raised $750 million in June 2026 at a $44 billion valuation, past $1 billion of annualised revenue, and Capital One completed its purchase of Brex in April 2026 in a deal worth $5.15 billion. In Europe, Pleo, Payhawk and Spendesk built the same model on local cards and VAT rules. Invoice-led platforms charge for the software instead and go deeper into procurement and AP: Coupa, Zip and Emburse, which K1 assembled from six older expense vendors. Which half fits depends on whether the money leaves on cards or on invoices.
