What is spend management?
Spend management is controlling company money before it goes out: corporate cards with limits set in advance, expense claims, supplier invoices and approvals, and the accounting entries that follow. Expense management is the part that handles employee claims and receipts; spend management adds cards, bills, procurement and the controls around them.

How spend management works
The category split in two. Card-led platforms fund the spending themselves and give the software away: Ramp raised $750 million in June 2026 at a $44 billion valuation, past $1 billion of annualised revenue, and Capital One completed its purchase of Brex in April 2026 in a deal worth $5.15 billion. In Europe, Pleo, Payhawk and Spendesk built the same model on local cards and VAT rules. Invoice-led platforms charge for the software instead and go deeper into procurement and AP: Coupa, Zip and Emburse, which K1 assembled from six older expense vendors. Which half fits depends on whether the money leaves on cards or on invoices.

What is the difference between expense management and spend management?+
Expense management covers what employees spend and claim back: receipts, mileage, travel. Spend management covers that plus corporate cards, supplier invoices, approvals and procurement, so the controls sit before the money moves rather than after.
How do the free platforms make money?+
They issue the corporate card and keep the interchange the merchant pays, so the software costs nothing. Vendors that do not issue cards charge per user or per company instead.
Does it replace accounts payable software?+
The card-led platforms have added bill pay, and for many mid-sized companies that is enough. Where procurement, contracts and multi-stage approvals matter, a dedicated AP or source-to-pay platform still does more.
