What is embedded accounting?
Embedded accounting is bookkeeping built into another product that a business already uses, such as a business bank account, a payments platform or industry software, rather than bought as separate accounting software. Transactions are categorised where they happen, receipts are attached in the same app, and simple reports or tax figures come out without exporting data to a ledger.

How embedded accounting works
The host product already holds most of a small business's financial data: a bank sees every payment, a payments platform sees every sale, and vertical software for trades or clinics sees jobs and invoices. Adding a ledger lets it categorise those transactions, match receipts, track what customers owe and prepare figures for VAT or sales tax returns in the same place. Some providers build their own ledger; others use embedded services from specialist vendors through APIs, the same way payroll and tax are embedded. For the business, embedded accounting means fewer tools; for its accountant, the question is whether the books can be reviewed, adjusted and exported to standard formats. Tide and ANNA Money combine business banking with bookkeeping in the UK; Check embeds payroll and April embeds tax for software platforms.
Common questions
What is the difference between embedded accounting and cloud accounting software?+
Cloud accounting software is a standalone ledger that connects to banks and other apps. Embedded accounting lives inside another product, usually covering simpler needs for that product's customers.
Can an accountant work with embedded accounting?+
Often, through accountant access or exports, but tools vary. Check that the accountant can see transactions, make adjustments and export a trial balance or full ledger in a usable format.
Is embedded accounting enough for a growing business?+
For simple businesses, it can be. Companies with several bank accounts, stock, staff or entities usually move to a full ledger that the embedded tool can feed.
