Value pricing

What is value pricing for accounting firms?

Definition

Value pricing is setting a professional fee by the value the work has to the client, agreed in advance, rather than by the hours it takes. An accounting firm using value pricing offers a fixed price, often with several service options, and the client knows the cost before work begins, while the firm keeps the benefit of working efficiently.

How value pricing works

The firm starts with a conversation about what the client needs and what it is worth to them, then proposes a fixed price for a defined scope, often as three options at different levels of service. Hourly billing rewards time spent; value pricing rewards results and efficiency, so automation and AI improve the firm's margin instead of reducing its fees. The risks are under-quoting and scope creep, which is why the scope must be precise in the engagement letter and changes priced separately. Many firms still record time to check that prices cover the work. Value pricing usually goes together with monthly billing by direct debit or card, which also lowers lock-up. Ignition builds proposals with pricing options and collects payment, and Anchor turns agreed fixed prices into automatic billing.

Common questions

What is the difference between value pricing and fixed fees?+

A fixed fee can still be calculated from expected hours. Value pricing sets the price from the value to the client, so two clients with similar work can pay different amounts.

Does value pricing work with AI and automation?+

Yes. Because the price does not depend on hours, time saved through automation becomes margin for the firm rather than a lower bill.

How do firms protect value-priced work from scope creep?+

By defining the scope precisely in the engagement letter, pricing extra work separately and recording time to check whether prices cover the effort.
