What is business intelligence (BI) in finance?

Definition

Business intelligence (BI) is software and practice for turning data from business systems into reports, dashboards and analysis that people use to make decisions. In finance, BI combines ledger data with sales, operations and HR data to show performance by product, customer, region or team, with the ability to drill from a total down to the transactions behind it.

01

How business intelligence is used in finance

A BI setup extracts data from the general ledger, ERP, CRM, billing and payroll, models it into consistent dimensions such as entity, department and product, and presents it in dashboards and reports that refresh automatically. Finance uses it for management reporting, margin analysis, KPI tracking and board packs. General BI tools are built for analysis of actual data; FP&A platforms add budgeting, forecasting and scenario planning with write-back, so plans and actuals sit in one model. Many finance teams use both, or an FP&A tool that includes reporting. The hard part is rarely the dashboard: it is a clean chart of accounts, consistent dimensions across systems and agreed definitions of each metric. Helu combines reporting with budgeting for smaller companies, and Abacum and Aleph report actuals against plan.

Common questions

What is the difference between BI and FP&A software?+

BI tools analyse and present actual data. FP&A software adds budgeting, forecasting and scenario modelling, with users entering plans that are compared with actuals.

Can accounting software replace a BI tool?+

For standard financial statements and simple dashboards, often yes. Cross-system analysis, such as margin by customer combining billing, CRM and cost data, usually needs BI or an FP&A platform.

What data problems affect finance BI?+

Inconsistent coding, dimensions that differ between systems and unclear metric definitions. Cleaning these up in the ledger is usually the first step.
