What is an AI copilot in accounting?
An AI copilot is an assistant built into a work tool that helps the person using it: it answers questions about the data on screen, drafts text, formulas or entries, and suggests next steps, which the user accepts, edits or rejects. In accounting software, copilots explain variances, draft journal descriptions, summarise documents and answer questions about the books.

How AI copilots work in finance tools
A copilot combines a large language model with access to the data in the product it sits in, such as the ledger, the close checklist or an audit file, under the user's permissions. The user asks in plain language, and the copilot retrieves the relevant records and drafts an answer or an action, usually with links back to the underlying transactions so the result can be checked. The defining feature is that a person stays in control of each step: nothing posts or changes until the user accepts it. That separates copilots from AI agents, which carry out multi-step tasks on their own within set limits and report back. Many products now offer both. Digits answers questions on the books, Numeric drafts close commentary, DataSnipper assists auditors inside Excel, and Basis provides AI for accounting firms.
Common questions
What is the difference between an AI copilot and an AI agent?+
A copilot assists a person who decides each step. An agent carries out a task from start to finish on its own, within limits, and asks for review at set points. Copilots draft; agents do.
Is an AI copilot safe to use with financial data?+
It depends on the vendor's controls: whether data is used to train models, where it is processed, and whether the copilot respects user permissions. Finance teams review these terms as for any other system holding ledger data.
What tasks do accounting copilots help with?+
Answering questions about balances and transactions, drafting variance and flux commentary, summarising contracts and documents, writing formulas and journal descriptions, and explaining unfamiliar entries.
