What is an accounting tech stack?

Definition

An accounting tech stack is the set of software a finance team or accounting firm uses, and how those systems connect. For a company it usually means a general ledger or ERP at the centre, with tools for payables, receivables, spend, payroll, tax, close, planning and reporting around it. For a firm it adds practice management and client-facing tools.

01

The layers of an accounting tech stack

Most company stacks have a core and spokes. The core is the ledger or ERP, which holds the chart of accounts and the books. Around it sit transaction systems that feed it: billing and receivables, AP and procurement, cards and expenses, payroll and HR, banking and treasury, and tax engines. Above it sit close and consolidation tools, planning and reporting. Accounting firms run practice management, document collection, tax preparation and client portals alongside the ledgers of each client. Choosing a stack means deciding which system owns each piece of data, how the integrations work, and when to replace several point tools with one platform or the reverse. Small businesses can run on Xero or QuickBooks with a few connected apps; mid-sized companies typically add NetSuite or Sage Intacct, a spend platform such as Ramp or Payhawk, payroll such as Gusto or Personio, and close software such as FloQast.

Common questions

What should be in a small business accounting tech stack?+

A cloud ledger with bank feeds, invoicing, a receipt or bill capture tool, payroll and, if staff spend money, cards or expense software. Most of these connect directly to Xero or QuickBooks.

When should a company replace point tools with one platform?+

When the integrations between them cost more effort than they save, data does not agree between systems, or controls are hard to apply across them. The reverse also happens when one platform cannot meet a specialist need.

What is in an accounting firm's tech stack?+

Practice management for workflow, deadlines and billing; document collection and client portals; tax and accounts production software; and the ledgers and apps each client uses.
