What is an accounting CRM?

Definition

An accounting CRM is customer relationship management software built or set up for accounting firms. It tracks prospects and clients, the services each client buys, contacts, deadlines and communications, and often handles onboarding and identity checks. It either sits inside a practice management platform or is a standalone CRM connected to one.

01

How an accounting CRM works

General CRMs such as HubSpot and Salesforce are built around a sales pipeline. Accounting firms need more after the sale: which entities a client has, which services and deadlines apply to each, who signed the engagement letter and whether anti-money laundering checks are current. Practice management platforms such as Karbon, TaxDome and Canopy keep client records, communication and workflow in one system. FibreCRM is a CRM for accountancy firms that adds client onboarding and KYC and AML checks and connects to practice management and accounting software, including IRIS, CCH, Xero and QuickBooks Online.

Common questions

Do accounting firms need a CRM?+

Every firm needs one reliable client record. Smaller firms usually use the client module in their practice management software; firms with a sales team or many service lines add a dedicated CRM for pipeline and marketing.

Can HubSpot be used as an accounting CRM?+

Yes, for marketing and the sales pipeline. Firms usually add custom fields for services and deadlines or connect it to practice management software, because HubSpot is a general sales and marketing CRM rather than a practice system.

What is the difference between an accounting CRM and practice management software?+

A CRM manages relationships: prospects, contacts, communications and services sold. Practice management runs the work: jobs, deadlines, time, billing and documents. Many products now cover both.
