What is ISO 20022?
ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial messages, such as payment instructions, bank statements and remittance advice. It uses structured XML fields that carry far more detail than older formats, including full names, addresses and remittance information, and it is now used by most major payment systems and for cross-border payments over Swift.

How ISO 20022 works
Messages are grouped by business area. Payment initiation messages, such as pain.001, carry a company's payment instructions to its bank; cash management messages, such as camt.053 end-of-day statements and camt.054 notifications, report transactions back. Banks use pacs messages between themselves. Large payment systems have moved over: the US Fedwire Funds Service switched on 14 July 2025, and on Swift the period in which older MT messages and ISO 20022 ran side by side for cross-border payments ended on 22 November 2025. SEPA has used ISO 20022 from the start. For finance teams the gain is data: structured remittance information that survives end to end, so incoming payments are easier to match to invoices and sanctions screening is more accurate. ERPs, treasury and AP systems generate pain.001 files and read camt statements.
Common questions
What is the difference between ISO 20022 and MT messages?+
MT messages are Swift's older text formats with short, fixed fields. ISO 20022 messages are structured XML with many more fields, so names, addresses and remittance details can be sent in full.
What are pain.001 and camt.053?+
pain.001 is the ISO 20022 message a company sends its bank to instruct payments. camt.053 is the end-of-day bank statement a bank sends back, which accounting and treasury software import.
How does ISO 20022 help reconciliation?+
Remittance details, such as invoice numbers, travel with the payment in structured fields, so receiving systems can match cash to invoices automatically instead of relying on a short free-text reference.
