What is continuous close?
Continuous close is running the steps of the month-end close throughout the month instead of after it: reconciling accounts daily, posting accruals and adjustments as information arrives, and reviewing results as they build up. Period-end then becomes a short confirmation of books that are already largely complete, rather than a multi-day project.

How continuous close works
Work that traditionally waits for period-end is moved earlier. Bank and card transactions are matched daily from feeds; intercompany is agreed as it is booked; recurring accruals, prepayment releases and depreciation post on schedules; variances are reviewed weekly. What remains at period-end is the work that cannot be done earlier: final cut-off, estimates that depend on the last day's data, and sign-off. It depends on automated matching, clean data flowing from sub-ledgers and a close checklist that assigns ownership of each task during the month. Strictly, soft close means a lighter close in non-quarter months, but the terms are often used together. Close tools such as FloQast, BlackLine and Numeric support it, and AI-native ledgers such as Quanta and Digits keep the books current between closes.
Common questions
Is continuous close the same as a soft close?+
Not quite. A soft close is a lighter month-end with fewer adjustments, often used outside quarter-ends. Continuous close keeps the full close but spreads the work through the period. Many teams use both.
Does continuous close remove month-end?+
No. Cut-off, final estimates, review and reporting still happen at period-end. What changes is how much is left to do then, which shortens the time to close.
What does a finance team need for continuous close?+
Bank and system feeds into the ledger, automated matching, scheduled journals, a shared close checklist with owners and due dates, and reviewers who look at results weekly rather than only after month-end.
